MamaCents: Making Good Green Sense

For those of you who have never heard of MamaCents before, it is the largest consignment sale of baby and children’s items in Texas. Mom’s from all over Central Texas do their green deed for spring and resell their children’s slightly used clothes which they have outgrown and buy good quality ones that fit them now. Pregnant Mom’s love MamaCents because they can pick up pretty much everything they need from strollers to clothes to toys to cribs.

What makes MamaCents so appealing is that they have volunteers that scrutinize through all the consignment submissions to insure and maintain a high standard of quality. So, when Mom’s go to shop, they don’t need to spend time inspecting the items.

As a consigner, once the sale is over, you have the choice of donating items that don’t sell or picking them up.  Mamacents donates the clothes to charities like Any Baby Can who distributes them to children that need them. My wife and I consigned last year and we made $200, which is what we spent at the sale and outfitted our 4 kids.

This year they have a few new things going on. For one, they will have a separate boutique of upscale woman’s clothes in a separate section of the store. On Saturday, there will be all kinds of fun kid’s activities like music classes for the kiddos (Music Forever), Zumbatomic demos (kids zumba), book signings (Little Pearly’s Hope by Martin Fry), magic shows, the Chic Fil A Cow and Chuck E. Cheese.

The MamaCents sale is Saturday, March 3rd , 9 AM to 3PM and a 50% off sale on Sunday March 4th , 10 AM to 4 PM. Located at 12901 N I-35 Austin, TX 78753
. The Sale is being housed at the shops at Tech Ridge (in the old Linen n Things building). It’s by the Parmer and 35 exit near Toys R Us, behind Chick Fil A.

Family Owned Salsa Business has the Wright Stuff

I was just at Whole Foods Market today and I had the pleasure of meeting Rick and Peggy Wright of Katy, Texas. Better yet I had the pleasure of tasting their line of Texas-made salsas. I’ve had plenty of salsas in my day, but I honestly haven’t tried one that tasted so fresh out of a bottle before, that is until today. The Wrights of Texas as their salsa is called comes in two kinds, a classic red and a unique green salsa. The red salsa comes mild, medium and hot and the green has two varieties of mild and hot. I tried them all and they were fantastic. They all tasted like they were made just then. Although, I have to say the green salsa won my heart. With a unique blend of cucumber, avocado and tomatillo, the green hot salsa (habanero peppers are added) was jumping off the chip. A truly delicious; fresh garden taste with a nice hot burn afterwards.

All of their salsas are raw with no added sugars, artificial preservatives, or vinegars; they are refrigerated from the time that they make them. The Wrights don’t make any of their salsas until they’re ordered.  Whole Foods Market on Lamar  carry their salsas and I have to say it is worth the visit. You can also order their salsas straight off their website.

Nepal and Austin Caught in a Hot Saucy Embrace

Austin is home to numerous hot sauce and salsa creators and for good reason. Due to the Texas HOT summers a variety of chili peppers grow here and in the state’s around us (New Mexico, Louisiana and Mexico to the South). Supermarkets here have whole sections devoted to just hot sauce and salsas. Most of the sauces you will find in Texas have the typical Southwest flavoring be it chipotle, serrano or jalapeno but there is one person here creating true exotic sauces that enlighten the tastebuds and that’s Kala Uprety, owner of Kala’s Kuisine. All of Kala’a products contains the best ingredients and contain no preservatives.

Kala offers a unique twist on traditional Nepalese dishes by combining them with flavors from around the world. From salsas & chutneys to lunch wraps & samosas. Kala’s Kuisine boasts a variety of award winning products. I have had the curry chipotle salsa which combines Nepalese curry spices with the smoky flavors of chipotle seasoning. I added them to my curry tofu wraps with coconut mango rice (see recipe).

I recently tried the Mango Chutney at the South Austin Costco, where I met Kala (she stands behind her products 100%, Literally). A nice sweet chutney with a good mix of spices. And, I have had her Hotvocado sauce, which I bought at the SFC Farmer’s Market in Sunset Valley. A real tasty green hot sauce with a medium-thick consistency and decent burn (from the Serrano peppers) but not too overpowering.

Kala Kuisine can be found on Amazon.com and at Whole Foods, Central Market, Wheatsville, Sun Harvest, Farm to Market, HEB and other markets around Austin. Kala’s Kuisine products have been used at Austin’s premier dining establishments such as the the Driskell Hotel and Hudson’s on the Bend.
